We are two North Carolina State University students planning a journey across America to to "discover" the country where we live. Our goal is to travel from California to North Carolina this summer while learning and experiencing as many new and interesting things as possible. Show support for our blog by telling us what you think and giving us ideas to maximize this experience for us. Also, if you are feeling generous or just want to help us out, any minimal donations towards our journey to help us pay for the small things we will need along the way (i.e. bread, peanut butter, jam) can be made by clicking on the "Donate" button below the fan page link.

Our Journey: How, When, Where, and Why...(By Zac Copes)

Some of you may know a little bit about why we are taking this "journey", to raise support for foundations that support sick children, but you may not know why or when or how we are going to accomplish our journey.

The story begins sometime at the beginning of this semester (Spring 2010) when Kevin and myself met each other. After discussing our personal interests for a short bit of time, we both realized we shared a passion for travel, adventure, and learning new things. We decided that we both wanted to travel across the country during the summer, but we did not want to do so alone. After choosing the cause we wanted to support, we performed a double twisted handshake (too complicated to explain) and started making basic plans for the trip we agreed to take together.

We decided we would be traveling light and made a list of everything we wanted to take (We will add this list to a later blog) then started telling everyone we knew about our plans for the summer. We bought tickets to fly from Raleigh, NC on May 12th to LAX where our journey would begin. We decided on a basic very flexible route that would take us through most of the Northwestern and Midwestern states and continued getting excited whenever we told people our ideas or thought about the trip in general. However, it was not until just recently, a few months after the double twisted handshake, that we ran into a spot of excellent luck. We met a new friend, Katie H, who told us that she had experience with nonprofit organizations. We told her our plans and she immediately began helping us turn our skeleton of a idea into a finely tuned plan of action that would raise serious awareness for the cause we wished to support.

After listening to Katie's advice, Kevin and I gave ourselves a crash course in social media. We started this blog, a twitter account, and even a facebook fan page. This week we will be sending out emails to friends, relatives, and organizations, asking for support. We plan to keep anyone following this blog updated on our preparations before the journey as well as our progress once we start our trek across America.

Let us know what you think of the blog. Give us ideas for our trip. Let us know if you have friends that would be willing to let us stay with them along the way. Any support or criticism is appreciated. You can comment directly to the blog or facebook fan page or send us an email at discoveringamerica2010@gmail.com. The most important thing to remember is that our journey is not actually about us but about raising support and awareness for organizations that strive to help children with severe illnesses.

Both Kevin and I will be taking turns writing for the blog. Please endure any horrible spelling or grammar mistakes we make.

  1. Awesome idea guys! You should post a map of your desired route to show which states you want to hit on your way back east.

  2. join couchsurfing.com. when wyatt and i biked across the country last summer we stayed with quite a few people from that site. it's a site where people help fellow travelers by giving them a couch or room to sleep for the night. everyone's very nice and it's completely safe.

invest in eno hammocks. easy to put up on the side of the road and pass out if you cant find a place to sleep
